A Classic Godmother Drink Recipe

The Godmother Cocktail is a lighter version of the classic Godfather Cocktail. Both drinks are mixed with Amaretto, but a Godmother replaces the scotch with vodka.

Vodka was a highly popular liquor in the 70s which is when this drink emerged and why this version first came about. Since then, it has been enjoyed by many.

The simplicity and sweetness of the delicate Godmother Drink make it one that many can enjoy. It is a smooth sip that makes for a great nightcap or a companion to a rich and creamy dessert such as cheesecakes or tiramisu.

What's in a Godmother Drink?

The Godmother Drink is a simple and easy-to-make two-ingredient cocktail recipe. The ingredients you will need to make this cocktail are Amaretto (an almond-flavored liqueur) and unflavored vodka.

With just two ingredients, it’s easy to experiment and find the version of this cocktail that you like best. Play around with finding your preferred ratio of plain vodka to amaretto liqueur.

As well as try it out using different varieties of vodka to find which you like best. The taste of vodka can vastly differ depending on the brand and the distillation process.

The amaretto sweetens the drink, but adding too much can result in an overly sweet and sugary drink. On the opposite side, not adding enough amaretto will allow the strong vodka to overpower the drink and ruin the beautiful balance.

The ratio I give in this recipe should add the perfect amount of sweetness to complement the vodka. But you can taste and adjust it to suit your personal preference.

How to Make a Godmother Drink

It is easy to make a Godmother Drink and there is no need for any fancy bar equipment. To make one, follow the steps below or find a detailed recipe card at the end of this post.

Fill a large glass or jar with ice cubes.

STEP TWO

Add the vodka and amaretto. Stir together and allow to chill and dilute for 30 seconds.

STEP THREE

Strain into a lowball serving glass (an old-fashioned glass) that has only one or two ice cubes in it.

STEP FOUR

Add an optional garnish (see below) and enjoy immediately.

Optional Garnish Suggestions

  • Lemon peel
  • Orange peel
  • Cocktail cherry
  • Zest twist
  • Lemon or orange slice

Recipe Tips and Notes

  • Due to the simplicity of this drink, the ice you use plays an important role. Use the cleanest water possible and avoid using ice that has been in the freezer for too long or near foods with heavy aromas, such as fish.
  • The Godmother is a perfect drink for large ice balls or large cubes. These will melt more slowly than standard-sized ice cubes and prevent your drink from becoming too diluted too quickly.
  • Choose a high-quality Amaretto as the flavor of it will really shine in this cocktail. Since amaretto is rarely poured over an ounce, you'll find that it lasts quite a while and that the taste is worth the extra cost.
  • This cocktail is made up of two spirits only so drink this cocktail responsibly. Most vodka is bottled at 80-proof and amaretto varies but on average comes in around 50-proof. So, therefore, we can estimate that the average godmother cocktail has an alcohol content of around 29 percent ABV (58 proof).

Godmother Cocktail Variations

The Godfather cocktail is part of a family of other “god-” cocktails. By adjusting the base liquor it will result in delicious variations. These different versions include:

  • Godfather Cocktail: Whiskey and amaretto.
  • Godchild (first version): Brandy and Amaretto.
  • Godchild (second version): Vodka and amaretto with cream for a more dessert-like cocktail.
  • Brooklyn Godfather: Bourbon and amaretto with both sweet and dry vermouth.
  • Godfather Sour: Whiskey, amaretto, egg white, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
