Vegan Frosting Ingredients
This delicious frosting recipe only requires four simple ingredients. The ingredients for this frosting are all naturally vegan and gluten-free, and can easily be found at your local supermarket.
This frosting recipe is made without vegan butter, which is a common vegan frosting ingredient. This recipe is still firm and creamy from the peanut butter and coconut cream and it can be used to pipe, spread and top a variety of sweet goods.
Ingredients you will need:
- Peanut butter. This recipe works best with smooth peanut butter to give the frosting a silky texture. I also used unsweetened peanut butter for this recipe so you may need to adjust the powdered sugar if your peanut butter is sweetened.
- Powdered sugar. If you use a peanut butter that is more liquid at room temperature you may need to add more powdered sugar to get it to firm up enough.
- Coconut cream. Adds delicious creaminess to the frosting.
- Vanilla extract. Enhances the flavor and taste of the frosting.
How To Make Vegan Peanut Butter Frosting Without Butter
Making vegan frosting is very similar to making a classic buttercream frosting. It is quick and easy to make with just three simple steps.
Step-by-step instructions
STEP ONE
Cream the peanut butter and coconut cream. In a large mixing bowl, mix the coconut cream and peanut butter with an electric mixer on high-speed for 3 minutes, or until light and fluffy.
STEP TWO
Add the powdered sugar and vanilla. Lower the speed of your mixer and add the vanilla and the powdered sugar a little at a time until desired texture is reached.
STEP THREE
Mix together. Keep mixing the frosting until it is well combined.
How to store vegan frosting:
Store leftover peanut butter frosting in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to use, thaw the frosting slowly at room temperature before using - do not microwave it.
Recipe Tips & FAQs
If you find that you have whipped your frosting for too long and the icing is now too fluffy, give it a few stirs with a wooden spoon to knock out some of the air in it.
I dont normally sift my powdered sugar when making this recipe as I find the electric mixer gets all the lumps out, but if your powdered sugar is very dry and lumpy, give it a sift before adding it for the best results.
When adding the powdered sugar, start the mixer at its lowest speed and add it in gradually so it doesn’t make a mess and fly everywhere.
This vegan peanut butter frosting recipe makes enough frosting for 12 cupcakes or a tray of brownies. To make enough frosting to cover a layered cake, double the recipe.
Yes, you can! The texture of this frosting is perfect for piping, but if you don’t want to pipe, it is also easy to spread with a butter knife or spatula.

I'm sorry the recipe didn't work well for you. Perhaps it's a difference in peanut butter brands. I have had that issue in the past.
