Ingredients & Notes
- Banana. Frozen banana gives this smoothie a delicious, thick texture. As well as adding nutrients and flavour to it. If you don't have any frozen bananas, you can use fresh ones but this may alter the texture of your smoothie.
- Chia seeds. These nutritious seeds are full of protein and healthy fats.
- Mixed berries. I like to use frozen berries to keep the smoothie nice and chilled. But you can also use fresh mixed berries.
- Maple syrup. You can substitute the maple syrup with agave syrup if preferred.
- Almonds. Adds yummy texture to the smoothie as well as protein and healthy fats.
- Activated charcoal powder. The star ingredient! This is what gives the smoothie its detoxifying element as well as its dramatic black color.
WHAT TOPPINGS GO WELL WITH AN ACTIVATED CHARCOAL SMOOTHIE?
Adding delicious toppings to a smoothie bowl is always the best part. For this smoothie bowl, I like to add fresh fruit, berries, a sprinkle of granola, chia seeds, coconut flakes, nuts, and/or seeds. Have fun adding different combinations to your smoothie bowl!
Health Benefits of Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is an effective and healthy natural detoxifier. It binds to any toxins or chemicals in order to prevent our bodies from absorbing them. Activated charcoal is extremely porous so lots of different substances are able to bind to it.
When the activated charcoal is flushed from our system, all of the toxins and chemicals it has absorbed go along with it. You can use activated charcoal for both internal and topical use.
Due to its detoxifying ability, activated charcoal is also a powerful digestion aid. It is also commonly used in a variety of health and beauty products to improve the skin, as well as in teeth whitening products.
How to make an activated charcoal smoothie bowl
STEP ONE
Place the ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until completely smooth.
STEP TWO
Pour the smoothie into a serving bowl and top with your desired toppings. I used fresh fruit and flowers.
RECIPE NOTES
- If your smoothie is too thin, thicken it up by adding an extra tablespoon of chia seeds.
- If your smoothie is too thick, you can thin it down by adding some milk or water.
- Use a good quality high-speed blender for extra smooth and creamy smoothies. I like to use this blender, but any high-speed blender will be able to get the job done!
- You can turn this smoothie into a smoothie by adding ¼ cup of any preferred milk. This will create a thinner smoothie consistency that you can drink.
Smoothie Storage Instructions
FRIDGE
Smoothies are best enjoyed immediately after blending. But you can also store them in an airtight jar in the fridge for 1 - 2 days. The smoothie might separate slightly while stored - but just give it a quick stir before adding your toppings and serving!
FREEZER
You can also freeze your charcoal smoothie. Simply place it in an airtight freezer-safe jar, and freeze for up to 3 months. To defrost the smoothie, place it in the fridge the night before you want to drink it. Then stir and enjoy the next day!
