What exactly is Matcha Powder?
Matcha is a powdered tea made from Japanese green tea leaves. The tea leaves are ground to a fine powder which can then be used for drinks, cooking, and baking. Matcha contains nutrients from the entire leaf and is filled with nutrient-dense properties. I like to think that this almost makes these matcha donuts count as a healthy treat!

So what does a matcha donut taste like?
The flavor of matcha is difficult to describe – it is a little earthy, but it also has a subtle sweetness. This unique earthy sweetness shines when it is baked into sweet treats, like this matcha donut.

How To Make This Baked Matcha Donut Recipe
This is a quick and easy baked donut recipe! Along with your matcha powder, you only need pantry staples and it is made in just one bowl. To make this baked green tea donut recipe:
- Preheat oven and prepare donut pan. Preheat oven to 375F/180C and grease or spray your donut pan with non-stick spray.
- Whisk oil and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the oil and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg. Once light and fluffy, add the egg and continue to whisk.
- Add dry ingredients. Once the egg is well combined, add the baking powder, baking soda, matcha powder, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla essence. Stir together until well combined.
- Alternate milk and flour. Alternately add the flour and milk until all has been combined.
- Spoon into prepared pan. Spoon the thick batter into the prepared greased donut pan and bake for 10 - 15 minutes, or until donut has compeletely cooked through.
- Allow to cool. Once the donuts have finished baking, remove from oven and leave them in the pan to cool.
How To Make The Cream Cheese Matcha Glaze
This matcha glaze is creamy and sweet which is the perfect complement to the soft, baked donuts. It is also incredibly easy to make - I like to whip up the matcha glaze while the donuts bake. To make the matcha glaze:
- Cream butter and cream cheese. In a mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to whisk together the butter and cream cheese until softened and smooth - about 5 minutes.
- Add powdered sugar and milk. Sift in the powdered sugar and add the milk. Mix together until well combined. Add a splash of milk if the consistency is too thick.
- Add powdered matcha. To create pretty varying shades of green, equally divide the cream cheese glaze into three bowls. Add ¾ teaspoon matcha powder to one bowl, ½ teaspoon to the next bowl, and a ¼ teaspoon to the last bowl. Mix until combined.
- Top the donuts. Spread the matcha glaze over the cooled baked donuts. Make sure the donuts are completely cool before adding the cream cheese glaze to them.
Matcha Glaze Alternative:
Instead of the cream cheese matcha glaze, you can dip the warm donuts in a combination of powdered sugar and matcha powder. To achieve this, mix together 1 tablespoon matcha powder and 125g (4oz) powdered sugar in a small bowl. Dip the warm donuts in this mixture and enjoy!
FAQS
Matcha is great for baking because not only does it retain its distinctive flavor but the vibrant color comes through even after being baked.
Ceremonial grade matcha is made from younger leaves so has a slightly sweeter taste and a more vibrant color. Whereas, culinary grade matcha is made from leaves that are harvested at a later stage and thus has a more bitter taste. Both are equally filled with health benefits.
Matcha has been shown to have great gut healing properties. Matcha supports good gut bacteria and acts as a great prebiotic.
