So what is butterscotch?
The term butterscotch is used for the flavour of brown sugar and butter together. Caramel, butterscotch, and toffee can all be seen as part of the same (delicious) family.
They are similar in many ways, but there are subtle differences that set them apart from each other. They are all made from a combination of butter and sugar.
Caramel is traditionally made with white sugar, butter, and heavy cream, whereas butterscotch is made using brown sugar which gives it a richer, deep caramelized flavor.
Brown sugar contains molasses which is what gives butterscotch its deeper and more intense flavor.
Butterscotch is similar to toffee, but for butterscotch, the sugar is boiled to the soft crack stage and not hard crack when making butterscotch boiled-sweets.

Ingredients & Notes
This recipe uses pantry staple ingredients to make a delicious, moist bundt cake that everyone will love. It is full of rich flavors and ingredients that keep the cake moist and soft.
The ingredients you will need to make this butterscotch bundt cake are:
- Oil. Any light oil will work for this recipe. I like vegetable oil or canola oil best.
- Light brown sugar. For some rich molasses sweetness.
- Eggs. Give the cake a soft, light texture. If your eggs are not at room temperature, place them in a bowl of warm water for 10 minutes before using to bring them to temperature.
- All-purpose flour. Be sure to spoon and level your flour when measuring it to avoid adding any extra flour which can make your bundt cake dry and dense. Feel free to substitute an equal amount of your favorite 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
- Baking soda. This raising agent gives rise to the cake which adds lightness to the cake's texture and a soft and fluffy crumb.
- Ground cinnamon. For a subtle touch of spiced flavor.
- Vanilla extract. Adds some yummy vanilla flavor to the bundt cake and enhances its taste.
- Plain yogurt. Keeps the cake nice and moist for days after baking. Sour cream will also work well so use whatever you have on hand.
- Salt. To balance out the sweetness and enhance the cake's flavor.
- Caramel. For rich, deep caramel flavor.
For The Creamy Butterscotch Glaze:
- Butter
- Dark brown sugar
- Heavy cream
- Vanilla extract
- Salt
How to make a butterscotch caramel cake with a butterscotch glaze
This is a simple caramel cake recipe that can be made in just minutes! While the cake bakes, make the yummy butterscotch glaze and you will soon have a delicious, cozy dessert to enjoy.
Step-by-step instructions to make the bundt cake:
STEP ONE
Prepare oven & pan. Preheat your oven to 180C/375F and generously grease a bundt pan.
STEP TWO
Cream sugar, oil, and eggs. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer. This should take about 5 minutes.
STEP THREE
Combine dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until well combined.
STEP FOUR
Mix the batter together. Add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture alternately with the yogurt until the batter is just combined.
STEP FIVE
Bake the bundt cake. Pour the cake batter into the prepared bundt pan and bake for 45- 55 minutes, or until cooked through and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Remove the bundt cake from the oven and wait 10 minutes before flipping the bundt out onto a plate or cooling rack.
How to make the easy butterscotch glaze
- Melt the butter. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the butter and allow it to melt.
- Add remaining ingredients. Once the butter has melted, add the sugar, salt, and cream and stir until well combined.
- Cook the sauce. Boil the sauce for 4 - 6 minutes, occasionally scraping down the sides of the saucepan.
- Stir in the vanilla extract. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Cool the sauce. Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature. You can then pour the sauce over the cooled bundt cake before serving.
Storage & Freezing
This caramel butterscotch cake can be kept in the fridge for up to 3 days. It is best to keep the cake airtight - I recommend using a cake carrier, as that’s the easiest way to keep it covered.
The cake can also be frozen for up to 2 months. You can freeze the whole cake or you could also freeze individual slices wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Thaw in the fridge or on the counter at room temperature before enjoying.
Do you flip a bundt cake when it's hot or cold?
When you remove a bundt cake from the oven after baking, don't flip it out of the pan immediately. Instead, let the bundt cake cool for ten minutes in the pan before you flip it out.
Once the bundt cake has cooled slightly, place a plate or wire rack over the base of the cake and then invert the pan to flip the cake out.
It is important to prep your bundt pan extremely well so that the cake will flip out of the pan as easily as possible.
IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUNDT CAKE AND REGULAR CAKE?
Although any cake batter can be cooked in a bundt pan, there is a difference between a bundt cake and a regular cake. The main difference between bundt cakes and regular cakes is the shape of the pan and the cake.
The most distinct difference about a Bundt cake is its shape. A cake that is baked in a Bundt pan has a donut-like shape with a large hole in the middle.
This can affect the way the cake cooks, but the most distinct difference is just the shape of the final cake. This caramel butterscotch cake can be cooked in normal cake tin but adjust the cooking time.
