A fruity Gin Sour cocktail recipe
A gin sour is a classic, much-loved cocktail. And this blueberry version gives this traditional drink a fruity, berry twist which is absolutely delicious.
A gin sour is a mixed drink containing gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup to sweeten it. The "sour" part in the name comes from the lemon juice in the recipe. Gin Sours also often include egg white or aquafaba (the water from canned chickpeas), which is added to the drink to create a thicker, frothier drink.
A gin sour requires a cocktail shaker but it is easy to make and the end result is refreshing and fruity. Blueberry and gin are perfect flavor combinations - check out my Blueberry Gin & Tonic if you are also a fan!
This blueberry cocktail is not only delicious but also really pretty. I use fresh edible flowers to garnish my drinks but fresh blueberries also work well. The beautiful blue color is thanks to the blueberry syrup or cordial that is added.
Ingredients Needed & Notes
- Lemon juice: Adds a zesty flavor and activates the egg white to create the gin sour look and feel. I highly recommend using fresh lemon juice for the best results!
- Gin: Any gin will do, and the added amount can be adjusted according to your preference. (You can leave out the gin or replace it with non-alcoholic gin for a mocktail version.)
- Egg white: Gives the gin sour its iconic look and texture. Make sure you are using fresh, room-temperature eggs for this recipe.
- Blueberry cordial (or blueberry syrup): Adds yummy blueberry flavor and perfectly sweetens the cocktail.
- Ice cubes: Makes the drink a refreshingly cool temperature for serving.
- Garnish: I used a variety of fresh edible flowers, but fresh blueberries will also look pretty. Or it is even beautiful as a plain, ungarnished drink.
Serving Suggestions
It is best to serve this drink immediately after making it. But first I like to add a simple garnish to make the cocktail extra special. You can use fresh berries, fresh flowers, a slice of lemon, or even fresh herbs to make your gin sour a show stopper and to add extra flavor.
How To Make A Blueberry Gin Sour Cocktail
This blueberry gin cocktail is easy to make and uses simple ingredients. You will need a cocktail shaker as well as serving glasses to prepare your gin sours. Follow the instructions below or find the full recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Step-by-step Instructions
STEP ONE
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
STEP TWO
Add the lemon juice, gin, blueberry cordial, and egg white.
STEP THREE
Shake well, for about 2 - 3 minutes. (This ensures the desired layer of foam forms on top of the cocktail)
STEP FOUR
Pour into serving glasses and garnish as desired. Serve immediately.
How to make blueberry syrup
To make ½ cup of blueberry syrup (which will make four Blueberry Gin Sours), combine ½ cup of sugar and ½ cup of water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, add 1 cup of fresh blueberries.
Mix in the berries and then turn the heat down to medium-low and let the blueberries simmer for 10 minutes. Don’t stir or smash the berries while cooking.
Remove the saucepan from the heat, let it cool completely, and then strain the syrup into a sterilized glass jar. Discard the blueberries or keep them and spoon them over ice cream or yogurt or use them in other recipes such as overnight oats, blueberry muffins, etc.
How to make a non-alcoholic gin sour (mocktail):
Transforming this gin sour into a non-alcoholic mocktail version is incredibly simple. You can just leave out the gin entirely from the recipe and the texture and flavor of the cocktail will not be compromised at all. You could also use your favorite non-alcoholic gin to create a delicious mock Gin Sour Cocktail.
Can I use Vodka instead?
Yes, you can. However, gin provides a complex and tasty flavor profile to this drink, so I do recommend using gin highly. Vodka is a tasteless alcohol, so it won’t deliver the same flavor result, but you’re welcome to use it if you prefer and the recipe will still be successful.
Do I have to use Egg White in a gin sour?
No - You can omit the egg white entirely if you like, but it then won’t have the foamy top layer nor the creamy texture. A tablespoon of aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) can be substituted for egg white if preferred or as a vegn alternative.
