An Easy Blue Margarita Cocktail Recipe
Everybody loves a traditional margarita - it's a classic for a reason! And a blue margarita is also always a huge hit too!
With the addition of the orange liqueur, Blue Curacao, you get an extra kick of flavor and color in a blue margarita. And who wouldn't want that?
The blue curaçao replaces the triple sec (Cointreau) in a traditional margarita recipe. It is sweeter than triple sec and has a slightly bitter citrus taste, thanks to the bitter oranges from which it is made.
This infusion of bittersweet citrus flavor pairs perfectly with tequila and lime in this tasty and refreshing cocktail. And the best part is that it is incredibly easy to make!
This cocktail recipe requires no fancy bar equipment or blenders. It just needs four simple ingredients and a couple of minutes to make it!

Ingredients Needed and Notes
The International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails definition of a classic margarita is just tequila, Cointreau (or Triple Sec), and lime juice. We have stuck to this tried and true definition and just swapped out the Triple Sec for Blue Curacoa. So the ingredients you will need to make this tasty blue version are:
- Tequila. You can use any type you prefer best!
- Lime Juice. We always highly recommend using freshly squeezed juice for making cocktails as it gives the best flavor.
- Blue Curacao. I recommend going for a mid to high-end Blue Curacao, like Giffard or Drillaud, for a more authentic orange peel flavor. If you are struggling to find this ingredient you can double the Triple Sec and add blue food coloring as a substitute.
- Ice cubes. This makes the drink chilled and deliciously refreshing.

Optional Garnishes
This is a striking drink all on its own, but I like to add a garnish to make it even more special and celebratory. This is entirely optional as this drink is beautiful and delicious as is. But if you would like to garnish your cocktail you can find some inspiration below:
- Lime wedge or wheel
- Salt to rim the glass
- Blue sugar to rim the glass
- Edible flowers
- Cocktail cherries
- Orange slice
- Citrus zest twist
- Cocktail umbrella
