History of this cocktail
Although the Lynchburg Lemonade is named after the home of the Jack Daniel’s distillery, it was actually created in Huntsville, Alabama. Tony Mason owned a bar there and created this drink in 1980.
Mason later sued Jack Daniel’s when they started promoting his drink on the distillery’s website without giving him any credit or compensation. The distillery won the 13 million dollar case as what they are doing is technically considered legal.

What is in Lynchburg Lemonade?
This spiked lemonade requires just a few ingredients to make a well-balanced and flavorful drink. Below you can find what you will need to make this whiskey cocktail as well as some optional substitutes! And you can also find all measurements, ingredients, and instructions in a detailed recipe at the end of this post.
- Whiskey. Traditionally this drink is made with Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 whiskey. But you can make it with any other kind too.
- Triple Sec. This orange-flavored liqueur originated in France and adds a delicious fruity flavor to this drink. You could also use Grand Marnier or Cointreau instead, but we recommend using a good quality Triple Sec for the best results.
- Lemon-lime soda. You can use any type of lemon and lime soda you prefer best! And if you prefer your drink less sweet, you can use homemade sparkling lemonade or a high-quality lemon soda instead.
- Lemon juice. Freshly squeezed is always best as it adds the best flavor to cocktails.
- Ice. This drink is best served cold with lots of ice.
The original recipe for this cocktail contains sour mix. So feel free to substitute the lemon juice with sour mix if you prefer and want to stick to the traditional way of making it!
Optional Garnish Ideas
This is a delicious drink all on its own, but it is always fun to add a garnish to make it feel extra special and celebratory. This is of course entirely optional as this drink is simple and delicious as is. But if you would like to add a garnish to your cocktail you can find some inspiration below:

How to Make a Jack Daniels Lemonade
This alcoholic lemonade only takes a few minutes to create and no fancy bar equipment is needed to make it. You can follow the step-by-step instructions below, or you can find a detailed recipe card at the end of this post.
STEP ONE
Pour the whiskey, triple sec, and lemon juice into a high-ball serving glass and add ice.
STEP TWO
Top with lemon-lime soda and gently mix together.
STEP THREE
Add an optional garnish, such as a lemon slice, and serve immediately.
Recipe Tip: Whenever you make a mixed drink with a carbonated mixer (or "topper") it is best to add the soda at the end right before serving. This will allow the drinker to enjoy the most effervescent cocktail.
Pitcher Variation
It is easy to make and serve this cocktail in a pitcher when catering to a crowd. To do so, add the whiskey, triple sec, and lemon juice to a large pitcher according to how many servings you desire. Simply scale the amounts of each ingredient up proportionally to make the amount you need.
Fill the pitcher with lemon-lime soda and gently stir. Serve immediately over ice. You can add lemon slices to the pitcher, or alternatively, you can garnish each individual drink as desired.
How Strong Is the Lynchburg Lemonade?
The Lynchburg Lemonade is not very strong. It is a relatively mild drink, on average a little lighter than a glass of wine. The alcohol content for a serving of this drink is:
- 3 units of alcohol
- 23.6 grams of pure alcohol
- 16.88% alcohol per volume (33.76° proof)
Recipe Tips and Tricks

- If you like a boozier drink feel free to add additional whiskey to your lemonade.
- You can serve this drink with crushed ice or whole ice. Just keep in mind that as the ice melts it will start to slightly dilute the drink.
