Can you make French Toast with Sourdough Bread?
Yes! Using sourdough bread to make French Toast is a delicious alternative to the classic brioche or white bread version.
The tang of the sourdough balances well with the sweetness of the milk and egg mixture to create a beautiful breakfast or brunch. The sourdough bread adds a delicious crusty and airy texture to the French toast and is always a delicious treat!
I love serving my French toast with an Oat Milk Latte or a big glass of Carrot Mango Juice!
Ingredients & Notes
- Eggs. I use large free-range eggs. I find one egg per person is a good ratio so you can adapt the recipe according to the number of portions you need.
- Milk. I like to use whole milk when making French toast. But you can use any milk you best prefer - including lactose-free milk and plant-based milk.
- Vanilla extract. This simple ingredient really enhances the flavor of the cooked French toast. But it is also fine to omit the vanilla extract if you don't have any.
- Ground cinnamon. The ground cinnamon combines well with the flavor of sourdough to create a tasty French toast that everyone will love. You can also add some ground nutmeg if you like things extra spiced.
- Sugar. You can adjust the amount of sugar you add according to your preference. You can also use any type of sugar or sweetener that you like best. I enjoy the flavor of brown sugar in my French toast!
- Bread. You can use any type of sourdough bread for this recipe. If using stale sourdough bread, I recommend soaking it a bit longer in the milk and egg mixture before cooking to soften it up. You can also use gluten-free sourdough bread with no discernible change in taste, texture, or cooking times.
- Butter/oil. Just use a little bit to cook the French toast. You can skip this ingredient if you are using a non-stick pan.
- Toppings. I served my sourdough French toast with fresh figs, mascarpone, and a drizzle of honey. You can serve it up any way you like best - see below for some delicious topping ideas!
