Expert Tips & Tricks
- Make the berry crumble ahead of time: You can make the filling, topping, or the whole thing ahead of time. Just keep it covered and refrigerated and bake it whenever you are read - it can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to a month.
- Make recipe adaptions to suit your taste: The mixed berry filling can be made with any type of berry - so feel free to use whichever ones you prefer. You can also adapt the amount of sugar in the filling depending on your taste and the sweetness of your berries. The amount of spice can also be altered depending on your preference.
- Don’t leave out the cornstarch: The cornstarch in the berries mixture really helps to bring the whole filling together so that it isn’t runny. And if you don’t have any cornstarch, you can use flour instead.
- Allow the crisp to sit for a few minutes before serving. Like a lot of baked desserts, this berry crumble needs a few minutes of resting in order to cool and set properly once it comes out of the oven.
Storage
It is best to store berry crumble in an airtight container. You can then store the berry crumble in the refrigerator for up to five days or in the freezer for up to three months.
Recipe FAQs
The main reason why your crumble will not have the right texture is if your butter is too soft. For the best crumble mix, make sure to use cold butter and then work quickly when you rub in the butter. If it feels more greasy than crumbly, you can place it in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to firm up the butter.
A crumble is ready when the fruit layer is bubbly and the crumble layer is crisp and golden brown in color.
