What’s the difference between Cinnamon Buns and Cinnamon Rolls?
Turns out cinnamon rolls and cinnamon buns are actually kind of the same thing! Cinnamon rolls (or buns) originate from Sweden and traditionally contain cardamom in the filling. Cinnamon rolls are usually finished with a glaze or frosting made with powdered/icing sugar and cream cheese - like in this recipe!
Ingredients You Will Need:
- Bread dough. Using ready-made bread dough is a quick and easy way to make fluffy sweet rolls in minutes.
- Butter. Keeps the cocoa cinnamon rolls moist and rich. You can use salted or unsalted butter depending on your preference.
- Cocoa powder. For extra deep chocolate flavor!
- Brown sugar. Adds sweetness and yummy stickiness.
- Ground cinnamon. Chocolate and cinnamon is such a delicious flavor combination - you're going to love it!
- Chocolate. You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate -whichever you prefer best!
Sweet Roll Cream Cheese Glaze
- Butter
- Cream cheese
- Powdered sugar
- Whole milk
Does chocolate and cinnamon go together?
Yes! Chocolate and cinnamon are often used together in baking as their flavors go together perfectly. Chocolate and cinnamon enhance each other's flavors and blend together well. They are both rich, earthy flavors that complement and combine together well.
How to make Cheats Chocolate Cinnamon Rolls
Because this recipe uses ready-made dough, it is so unbelievably easy to whip together whenever the craving hits. And believe me, once you take a bite into their fluffy and chocolatey goodness, the cravings for these cocoa cinnamon rolls will never stop!
Step-by-step Instructions
- Make the filling. In a small saucepan over a medium heat, melt the butter, cocoa powder, sugar, half the chocolate, and cinnamon. Once melted, remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool.
- Roll out the dough. While the chocolate mixture cools, roll out the bread dough into a 40 x 30cm rectangle on a well-floured surface.
- Add the filling. Spread the cooled chocolate filling over the rolled out dough and sprinkle over the remaining chopped chocolate, leaving a 1 cm gap around the edges.
- Roll into a log. Roll up the dough to form a 30 cm long log shape.
- Cut into rolls. Dust the rolled up dough and a serrated knife with flour. Trim off both ends and discard. Cut the remaining log into 12 equal parts and transfer them to a greased baking pan.
- Allow to rise. Cover with a dish cloth and allow to rise for 1 hour.
- Bake. Once the rolls have risen, place in the centre of your oven and bake at 180ºC/375F for 25 - 30 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Make the glaze. While the sweet rolls are baking, make the cream cheese glaze by whipping the butter and cream cheese together in a mixing bowl with an electric mixer. Once soft and creamy, add the powdered sugar and milk and mix until combined.
- Serve. Once the baked chocolate rolls have cooled, spread the glaze over the top and serve.
