- Demerara sugar. The key to a deep rich caramel.
- Heavy cream. Creates the creamy caramel sauce for the filling.
- Vanilla extract. Adds extra sweet flavor.
- Cornstarch and cold water. This will thicken up the caramel apple filling while it bakes.
You can use ready-made pastry for this recipe or preferably you can make your own. To make your own homemade pastry, you will need:
- All-purpose flour.
- Caster sugar.
- Salt.
- Cold butter.
- Cold water.
Do you cook apples before putting them in a pie?
Typically you do not cook apples before putting them in a pie. If the apples are sliced thinly when added to the pie they will cook through during the baking time of the pie. You can keep the apples in cold water to keep them from browning until it is time to assemble the apple pie. For this apple pie recipe, the apples are added to the pie uncooked and they are deliciously soft once the pie has finished baking.
