What is a 7 and 7 Drink
A 7 and 7 is a popular mixed whiskey highball drink that combines two simple ingredients to make a flavorful and refreshing sip. A traditional classic 7 and 7 cocktail combines Seagram’s 7 Crown whiskey with 7UP lemon-lime soda.
This whiskey cocktail has been much loved since the 1970s when it reached its peak of popularity. During the 1970s Seagram’s 7 Whiskey sold tens of millions of cases each year and the distinctive bottle could be found in almost every bar and at-home bar cart.
The simplicity of this drink along with its refreshing flavor has kept this cocktail as a popular bar order, but especially as an easy at-home drink option. You don't need any cocktail equipment to mix up one of these delicious drinks and it is almost impossible to get it wrong!

What Is a Highball?
A highball is a tall cocktail made with a spirit and topped with a non-alcoholic carbonated beverage — like sparkling water or tonic water. So with a 7 and 7, the carbonated beverage is 7-Up and the spirit is Seagram’s 7 Crown.
Ingredients Needed and Notes
Just like a Jack and Coke, the name tells you what goes into this mixed drink. Learn more about the two ingredients needed to make a 7 and 7 cocktail in the notes below and find a full recipe card at the end of this post with details and measurements
Seagram’s 7 Crown Whiskey
Seagram’s is the traditional whiskey used to make a 7 and 7 - but of course, this drink could be made with any other whiskey or bourbon that you prefer best. Segram's whiskey is mild and smooth and has a sweet, vanilla flavor.
Seagram’s 7 Crown is an 80-proof blended whiskey that is originally from Montreal, Canada. But since 2000 the company is owned by Diago and resides in the United States.
7-UP
7-Up is the traditional beverage that is used to top a 7 and 7. It is a lemon-lime soda that is sweet and bubbly and blends beautifully with whiskey. You can replace the 7UP with any other lemon-lime soda that you prefer best, such as Sprite.

How to make a 7 and 7 Cocktail
The 7 and 7 Cocktail is typically made directly in the highball glass or a Collins glass it will be served in. This means that this drink doesn't require any fancy bar equipment or techniques to produce a fresh and flavorful drink.
To make one, you can follow the step-by-step instructions below or you can find a detailed recipe card at the end of this post.
Step-By-Step Instructions
STEP ONE
Fill a serving highball glass with ice cubes.
STEP TWO
Add the whiskey and top with the lemon-lime soda.
STEP THREE
Gently stir and add any optional garnishes before enjoying it immediately.
Optional Garnish Suggestions
- Lemon or lime wedge
- Lemon or lime wheel
- Lemon or lime zest twist
Large Batch Pitcher Variation
It is easy to make and serve 7 and 7 cocktails in a pitcher when catering to a crowd. To do so, add the whiskey to a large pitcher according to how many servings you desire. Simply scale the amounts of each ingredient up proportionally to make the number of drinks you need.
You can then store the pitcher in the fridge and when you are ready to serve, fill the pitcher with lemon-lime soda and gently stir. Serve immediately over ice. You can add lemon slices to the pitcher, or alternatively, you can garnish each individual drink as desired.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- Use very cold whiskey and 7UP so it doesn't dilute the ice too quickly. You can also chill your serving glass beforehand to keep the drink nice and cold.
- You can also pair Seagram’s 7 with other mixers like club soda, sparkling lemonade, or ginger ale.
- This mixed drink is best enjoyed as soon as it is made as it will lose some of its carbonation over time. So it is best to serve this drink soon after making it.
- You can serve this drink with crushed ice or whole ice. Just keep in mind that as the ice melts it will start to slightly dilute the drink.
- If you like a boozier drink feel free to add additional whiskey or reduce the amount of 7UP in each serving.
- On average, the 7 and 7 cocktail is a relatively mild drink with an alcohol content in the 10 percent ABV (20 proof) range. But please always drink responsibly.
