Layers of velvety black, moist cake, covered in the softest black frosting and of course filled with my favourite Skittles & M&M's! This is the ultimate Halloween cake, with a classy twist of course!
Trick or treat! Why opt for one when you can have both? I'm all about embracing Halloween and you know that means ALL of the candy! Are you even halloweening if there isn't candy involved?
I whipped up this Midnight Candy Layered Cake in partnership with M&M's and Skittles for the ultimate Halloween treat! I wanted to make sure I kept it a little classy with an element of trickery so I topped this beautiful black cake with my favourite flowers and filled it with as much candy as I possibly could.
One slice of this delicious guy will also give you that #daretoscare look, so no need to worry about the perfect Halloween costume. See guys, I'm all about getting the most out of your cake ;)

Midnight Candy Layered Cake
Ingredients
For the Midnight Cake:
- 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Cup Cocoa Powder
- 1 1 /2 teaspoon Baking Powder
- ½ Cup Hot Coffee
- 1 Cup Butter softened
- 6 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 4 Eggs
- ¼ Cup Double Cream Yoghurt
- 1 ½ teaspoon Baking Soda
- 2 ½ Cups Soft Light Brown Sugar
- 1 ½ Cups Buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- Black gel food colouring
For the creamy frosting:
- 1 Cups Butter soft
- 4 Cups Powdered Sugar
- ½ Cup hot water
- 1 Cup Cocoa Powder
- 300 g Dark Chocolate melted
- ½ Cup Sour Cream
- 4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Black gel food colouring
Filling:
- ALL of the M&M's & Skittles
Instructions
For the Cake:
- Sift the salt, baking powder, cocoa powder and flour together and set aside.
- In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar together then add the eggs and vanilla and continue to mix.
- In a separate bowl combine the buttermilk and coffee.
- Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the coffee mixture.
- Add the yoghurt, vinegar, food colouring and bicarbonate of soda and mix until just combined.
- Dived the mixture between 4 round cake tins.
- Bake for 35-40 min or until a fork inserted comes out clean.
- Allow to cool before frosting.
For the frosting:
- Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add the remaining ingredients and continue to mix until everything is incorporated and you have a creamy consistency.
Putting it all together:
- Use a round cookie cutter to cut circles out of the centre of 3 of the layers. Keeping one of the circles for later.
- Pipe a little frosting on one layer of cake and continue the process until they are all stacked on top of each other.
- Use a spatula or knife to spread
- Place the cake in the fridge for 20min to allow the layers to set a little.
- Fill the centre of the cake with your favourite M&M's and Skittles.
- Top the cake with the circle of cake that you set aside earlier.
- Use a knife or spatula to cover the outside of the cake with frosting.
- Top with your favourite flowers or more candy!
