A Delicious Blue Motorcycle Cocktail Recipe

A Blue Motorcycle Drink is a tasty mixed cocktail that is kind of like a Long Island iced tea, but with a colorful blue twist! It is a very strong drink that combines a five varieties of liquor that includes rum, tequila, vodka, gin, and Blue Curaçao.

This cocktail is a refreshing one with lots of citrus flavor and bubbles. It’s well-balanced but also sweet enough that sweet cocktail lovers enjoy it.

The history of this cocktail is a bit of a mystery. As well as the origins of its unusual name. But what is known is that it originated in the early 1970s in New York City.

The Blue Motorcycle cocktail is also known as Adios Drink or AMF (short for Adios Motherfucker or Goodbye Motherfucker) because of how strong it is. This potent cocktail packs a punch with high levels of alcohol, so always apply caution and drink responsibly.

BLUE MOTORCYCLE COCKTAIL vs LONG ISLAND ICED TEA

These two cocktails share a lot of similarities. So much so that a Blue Motorcycle Drink is also sometimes referred to as a Blue Long Island Iced Tea.

The main differences between a blue motorcycle drink and a long island iced tea is Blue Curaçao and the type of soda used. Instead of the cola and triple sec in a traditional Long Island Iced Tea, you use Blue Curaçao and lemon-lime soda. I like to think of it as a summery and fruity alternative!

What's In A Blue Motorcycle Drink?

A Blue Motorcycle Drink contains 5 different types of alcohol along with lemon-lime soda and sour mix. It is a strong and citrusy cocktail and to make one you will need the following ingredients:

White rum. You can use any kind you like best! Clear or white rum is best for this drink as it is the most mild in flavor.

Silver tequila. This recipe is preferably made using silver tequila but you could also use a different variety if you don't have any silver tequila on hand.

Vodka. And plain, unflavored vodka will do!

Gin. There are so many different types of gin available with different tasting notes. So use whichever you prefer best.

Blue Curaçao. This is an orange-flavored liqueur that is dyed blue. This is a must-have ingredient to get the iconic blue hue of this drink.

Lemon-lime soda. You can use any type of lemon and lime soda you prefer best! And if you prefer your drink less sweet, you can use homemade sparkling lemonade or a high-quality lemon soda instead.

Sour mix. You can use store-bought or homemade. It is easy to make your own sour mix and you can find our simple recipe for it HERE.

Optional Garnish Suggestions

  • Lemon, lime, or orange slice
  • Cocktail cherries
  • A fresh sprig of mint
  • A cocktail umbrella
  • Lemon, lime, or orange wedge

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • This mixed drink is best enjoyed as soon as it is made as it will lose some of its carbonation over time. So it is best to serve this drink soon after making it.
  • You can serve this drink with crushed ice or whole ice. Just keep in mind that as the ice melts it will start to slightly dilute the drink.
  • Use a jigger or a measuring cup to measure your ingredients accurately. A precise measurement can make a big difference in the balance, consistency, and flavor of your cocktail.
  • You can prepare this cocktail ahead of time if hosting an event. Simply mix the booze and sour mix together and then store it in the fridge for as long as needed. When you are ready to serve, simply add in the lemon-lime soda or lemonade and pour over ice.
